I thought I knew the story of Abraham and Isaac, and was preparing the Sunday School lesson for my kids.  You know it too, we learned it when we were kids.  Abraham has Isaac carry the wood and he tells those with him Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.’

Abraham trusted God and he knew that Isaac would live, (Isaac was the promised son and Abraham was the father of many nations).  He just didn’t know how yet, that is why he told Isaac ‘God will provide’…..it’s where we get the phrase ‘Jehovah Jireh’.

They climb Mount Moriah, the Temple Mount, site of Solomon’s Temple to Yahweh, and area of Jesus’s trial and crucifixion.  God stops Abraham from sacrificing Isaac, and provides a ‘substitute sacrifice’….the ram from the thicket of thorns.  That’s when I saw the picture above, the lion in the thicket.  It’s the Lion of Judah, …it’s Jesus, ….God’s substitute sacrifice.  Then I remembered-

That the soldiers mocked Jesus and put a crown of thorns on his head…..

THORNS FROM THE THICKET.
